A heartbreaking story out of Florida today: veteran skydiver Capotorto Vitantonio reportedly told his wife that he wasn’t going to pull his parachute cord before his jump, and he was later found in field near skydiving center Skydive DeLand.
Vitantonio’s wife, Costanza Zitellini, allegedly received the video message and then immediately went to the Skydive DeLand hanger to bar her husband from getting on the plane. But by the time her plea reached his plane, Vitantonio had already leapt.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, police recounted part of Vitantonio’s video message as saying “[he was] not going to pull the cord and that he was going somewhere wonderful.” Zitellini reportedly received the video “moments before” her husband jumped.
Both Vitantonio and Zitellini were employees of United Parachute Technologies, which is also based in DeLand. This is reportedly the fifth fatality at Skydive DeLand in the past four years.
