How old are you?
Woman A: 25
Woman B: 25. I was 24 at the time of the story.
Woman C: 26
How long ago did your ride share hookup happen? Was it in an Uber Pool or a LyftLine or some other rideshare app?
Woman A: 5 Months ago in an Uber Pool
Woman B: My ride happened about year ago. I had ordered an UberPool for just myself.
Woman C: I met him in an Uber Pool on Halloween day of 2016. I was 25 at the time and dressed like a deer.
Where were you headed? Was it daytime or night?
Woman A: We were both heading to Crown Heights from Williamsburg, at 3AM. [Both are neighborhoods in Brooklyn, New York].
Woman B: I was heading home after a night out drinking in Williamsburg around 2 AM.
Woman C: To a bar downtown. It was nighttime.
How many other riders were in the car with you?
Woman A: Just us.
Woman B: It was just me at first, and then my new friend got in the car about a minute later.
Woman C: Other than the guy, just one — my sister.
How did the hook up happen? Who initiated what?
Woman A: I don’t know if I’d call it a “hook up” but, we started talking because there was an accident on [the street]. We hit serious traffic and were essentially at a stand still. He asked me, “So, this is exactly how you envisioned your night ending at 3AM, right?”. If memory serves correctly, we started talking about our nights. He told me how he was at a bar and how he spent the majority of the time in the bathroom because his friend got a little too wild before 8PM. I was all, “Where’s your friend? You leave him in the bathroom? Savage.”
Woman B: When he got in the car, the flirting commenced immediately. I was a chatter box of happy, hyper intoxication and he seemed to be acting like we were still at a bar, getting to know each other. I think after a few flirtatious minutes, he kissed me.
Woman C: After having good talk, I mentioned that we should hang out sometime. He asked for my number and then my sister and I were dropped off at the bar. About two hours later he texted me, inviting me to a party, but I told him we could hang out another time because I wanted to stay with my sister and friends. He texted me the next day and we went to a restaurant/bar across the street and had margaritas and appetizers. His friend met up with us at one point and I was actually a bit more interested in his friend because he was hilarious. His friend and I definitely had interest in each other, but were playing it cool. After eating and drinking some, the Uber Pool guy and I departed from his friend and went to his place. There, we got to know each other more, and we hooked up.
How far were you going/how long were you in the car that you had time for a hook up to unfold? Were time constraints on your mind at the time?
Woman A: Our estimated “15 minute” ETA turned into 1 hour. We were just talking, so, no “constraints”, I guess. He wasn’t creepy and I had no intention of getting physical.
Woman B: We were [on a ride that lasts] a solid 20-25 minutes. We were making out for a while and it was nice. It started to get heated, I think he felt me up? Things progressed quicker and quicker as we were chauffeured around Brooklyn, and he started making the moves to go down on me. As clothes started shedding, we arrived at my place—I was the first stop. He seemed to expect that he’d be invited up to continue our rendezvous. At first I was open to it, but after my tipsy brain got a hold on the logistics of the situation, I realized the ridiculousness of having my UberPool buddy into my apartment. After much begging on his end, he took no as an answer, and I gave him a fake number.
Woman C: We were in the car together for about 15 minutes. He was in the front seat and my sister and I were in the back seat, so no hooking up happened in the actual car. Time constraints were never on my mind in terms of swapping numbers or making any moves.
Did you end up going home with that person that night and only making one stop? If so, what did you tell the driver?
Woman A: Nope, but I got dropped off first and whilst trying to find my keys at my stoop (again, 3AM), I saw the Uber pull up DOWN THE BLOCK. He lived on my block.
Woman B: One stop shop.
Woman C: No, although he did text me two hours after the car ride to meet up in midtown.
Do you think the driver knew what was going on?
Woman A: Nope.
Woman B: Yes. I think it was just that time of the night, so he let [it] flow.
Woman C: Only that maybe the guy and I had interest in each other.
Do you still keep in touch with that person?
Woman A: Not by choice — the date was pretty dry, he was on his phone most of the time and yelled at the waiter (not cute). Unfortunately, Uber Pool doesn’t have an algorithm for people you’ve dated before and we’ve been Pooled together twice since. I think he feels awkward and always jokes about “well, can I get your number?”
Woman B: Nope. Sure wish I did though. What a bonding experience.
Woman C: No, and if we ever ran into each other I’m sure it wouldn’t be weird on either end.
Have you given your number out or hooked up with any other ride share passengers after that?
Woman A: Yes — he turned out to be a friend of a friend, though!
Woman B: Since then, I have exchanged numbers and LinkedIn requests with a few ride sharing passengers, but no more hookups. Yet.
Woman C: No, but if someone sparks my interest in a ride share I would definitely give out my number and go on a date…and if someone just blows my mind I would be open to hanging out right after, not necessarily hooking up though. It just depends!
